LINERIDER RECORDING TUTORIAL
Designed for Flash Beta 2 6.2/6.1

EXAMPLE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRvVah0NcS8

Recording Linerider tracks has always been a bit tricky. There are many tutorials out there, some good and some bad. This one works, i promise you that. Not only will it work, but it will also help you achieve the highest possible video quality - using the H264 codec.

Technical Terms

Before we get started, you'll need to understand these terms.
Codec: The code a video uses, there are many different codecs. Some are extremely efficient, such as H264 and DivX codecs.
FPS: Frames Per Second. The number of pictures a video plays per second. Suitable FPS for Linerider is 30-40, and 21+ for slower tracks.

Let's Begin...

Step 1: Setup
We're going to need to download and install some software from the net. Don't worry, all of it is free. No one should have to pay to record tracks, and if you have - you've been scammed.

Software required:
Linerider Beta 2 standalone (optional, online version will work - but slower)

Camstudio
http://www.camstudio.org/CamStudio20.exe
This is an open source screen recorder. Hypercam isn't free, which means it sucks. No really, it does suck.

K-Lite Codec Pack

http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/filepilot/fpt/video/codecs/k-lite_mega_codec_pack/klmcodec495.exe
This is the God of all codec packs. It makes life so much easier for everyone... It includes almost every codec you'll ever need.
If you've ever downloaded a video from the net which just didn't work, after installing this - it most probably will.

VirtualDub
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/
Ever noticed how after you pass you videos through Windows Movie Maker, it just ruins the quality? This thing doesn't, mainly because it wasn't programmed by Microsoft. This boy in college did a better job...
Download the version appropriate to your system, 32 or 64 bit. If you don't know what these different bit things mean, get the 32 bit version .

Step 2: Installing

Installing the K-Lite Codec Pack

Do the codec pack first, it makes sense that way :P.
There are a few options we need to check during the installation process for the codec pack. After "next"ing a few pages of the setup, you'll find yourself with this page...

You must change it to profile 7 or 8!
This is essential, not only for recording, but also for editing the video later.

It may prompt you to restart at the end of installation, it may not.

Installing Camstudio:
Very simple, no special settings needed.

Installing VirtualDub:
Extract to wherever you want. The Extracting is the Installing, it runs after extraction.

The Recording Process

Youtube likes its video frame size to be 1280x720. To achieve maximum quality, we'll record with this frame size so we won't have stretched or skewing to do along the way. Recording with this frame size will not be possible with the linerider.com online Beta 2, but everything else works .

Here's a video showing the exact settings Camstudio should be set under:

This is where we do things a little differently to other methods. We record under Auto adjust frame rate, But with slow motion enabled in Linerider. This will give you a very high quality video of your track in slow motion. In other words:

> Set camstudio to the settings in the video
> Record your lineride track with slow motion enabled, (press m to activate this while your track is playing)
> Save, name, and play the video!

IMPORTANT:
It is meant to be slow! This is where VirtualDub comes in!

Drink

Aaah, sorry. Will finish everything tomorrow

I know of a Mac program called "Snapz Pro" which does the same thing, but it's a trial version. There are probably free programs for macs hiding around the web if you look for em!

Kewl: all you technically need from his suggestions is CamStudio, which you can download for free. When you run it, it will give you a selection box, which you just put over the Line Rider flash screen, then play your design. Presto! You have a video. Of course, you won't be able to add music or edit it or anything fancy like that, but you'll have the movie at least.
